About Artist

Born in 1942, Mohamed Zakariya is a
calligrapher and metalworker. Zakariya
combines classical standards with a
modern sensibility to produce works
on paper, applications on wood, and
instruments from the history of science.
Zakariya began his studies of Islam and
Arabic in the 1960s. Zakariya received
his certificate in the thuluth and naskh
styles from calligrapher Hasan Çelebi and
in the taliq style from Prof. Ali Alparslan.
He lives in Washington, D.C, gives lectures
and teaches calligraphy. He held solo
exhibitions in the USA and participated
in group exhibitions in Dubai, Kuwait and
Qatar. From 2004 to 2012, Zakariya was
a member of the Joint Advisory Board,
Virginia Commonwealth University School
of the Arts in Qatar. He was awarded an
honorary doctorate of humane letters by
the university in 2012.
